I find it surprising that people will review a product or service that already has hundreds, if not thousands, of reviews, especially when 1) their review is not unique, 2) they are not incentivized to leave the review and 3) they are not complaining about something.
According to research from various organizations (source 1, source 2), a main driver of these reviews is that people have a strong desire to feel heard. Zooming out, an article in Psychology Today explained that people want to be respected and understood, and from this comes the need to be seen and heard. Without this need being met, “a person can feel self-doubt and insecurity, lower self-esteem, and also depression, anxiety or anger.”
For all businesses, including restaurants, hotels and retail stores, review management can be time-consuming and even frustrating. However, you can see that having a way for your customers to express themselves and feel validated is important.
