INTRODUCTION
If your restaurant is active on social media, you’re probably familiar with the Stories feature on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. YouTube also has a Stories function you can take advantage of, though there are some key differences.
Formerly known as “YouTube Reels,” YouTube Stories are visible for seven days (vs. one day on other platforms). In addition, the feature is only available for established channels with more than 10,000 subscribers, so you won’t have access to them unless your restaurant has a large following.
Since 73 percent of adults in the country use YouTube, it makes sense to explore the Stories feature if your channel qualifies.
Following are some tips on how your restaurant, restaurant chain or restaurant group can use YouTube Stories for marketing.
HOW TO CREATE YOUTUBE STORIES
YouTube Stories are short, mobile-only videos that allow you to connect with your audience in a more fun and in-the-moment way. Use the following steps to create a story.
- Sign in to YouTube on your mobile device.
- Tap the “camera +” icon, then click the Story icon (a round symbol with a plus sign).
- Choose to use a saved photo or video from your mobile device, or click the capture button (circle icon) to take a new photo or hold it down to record a new video.
- Add effects like music, filters, stickers or text, or use the scissor icon to trim your story.
- Save the story to the camera roll on your mobile device if you want to save it for later or tap “post” to publish the video.
Since Stories are meant to be a way to interact with guests and future diners, make sure to respond to comments from your followers. To do this, visit the Stories tab on your restaurant’s channel, tap on the story and then tap on the comments icon (a talk bubble with three lines) to see the entire thread.
Select the comment you want to reply to and tap “Reply in Story” below to record a video response or reply with an image. You can then edit your response and post it to your story where it can be viewed publicly.
HOW TO CREATE ENGAGING CONTENT FOR YOUR RESTAURANT’S YOUTUBE STORIES
There are a variety of content possibilities to explore with YouTube Stories. For instance, you could create “how-to” videos in which chefs at your restaurants prepare signature dishes. Since the Story expires after seven days, you should consider featuring week-long specials or a seasonal items.
You also can showcase special dinners or events with Stories by posting teaser videos before the event, as well as posting content while it’s happening and recaps to encourage customers to comment and share their experiences.
Exclusive footage of behind-the-scenes happenings or sneak peeks of new offerings or changes (e.g. restaurant remodels, revamped menus) are some other ideas that are likely to captivate your audience.
Be sure to stick to content that is likely to spark curiosity among your followers and always stay true to your brand. YouTube Stories are meant to be authentic experiences for your guests or future diners.
In addition, it’s best to let the photo or video doing the talking. Only use text when appropriate and try to keep it brief.
