The old days of a 20-page, almost-all-text whitepaper are gone, fortunately. No one, especially a physician or other healthcare employee, has the time to read such a long document.
Instead, we recommend 2-4 pages, filled with photos, graphics and/or charts. Here’s how to create a health tech whitepaper:
Executive Summary or Overview. Even 2-4 pages may be too long for some readers. That’s why it’s especially important to have a short executive summary or overview that explains your arguments. Length: half a page
Your main argument. Your goal is to explain your technology and what problems it solves. In this section, 2-3 key points/assertions are usually sufficient. Length: up to three pages, including these subsections:
- Statistics. Why is the argument that you’re presenting even important? You need to explain your context, and statistics can help. The CDC provides healthcare stats, both national and by state. Often times it will be best to present the stats in the form of a chart or table.
- Case or pilot study. Your readers will want to know how your technology works in a clinical setting, and more importantly, what were the outcomes (e.g. patient and/or provider).
Conclusion. We typically don’t think of this section as a true conclusion per se. Instead, we recommend creating a call to action, even something as simple as “for more information …” Length: half a page
