The University of Wisconsin and the Athletics Department failed in their initial actions following the discovery of fans wearing offensive costumes, one of which was a noose around the neck of President Obama, during the Badgers game vs. Nebraska on Oct. 31.
UW didn’t initially remove the fans from the game, and it later released a statement that included this line: “The costume, while repugnant and counter to the values of the university and athletic department, was an exercise of the individual’s right to free speech.”
Here’s my take: an action that is legal doesn’t necessarily mean it’s morally or ethically justifiable.
When we offer PR counsel to clients, we have to look beyond what the company has a right to do and tell them what in fact they should do.
After an intense and expected public outcry, UW is finally admitting its mistakes, starting by revoking the season tickets of the fans.
