Atwood Avenue Now Open to Bidirectional Traffic

(MADISON, Wis.)—Starting today, Atwood Avenue is open to bidirectional traffic from Fair Oaks Avenue to Cottage Grove Road. Prior to this opening, vehicles could only travel inbound/toward downtown from Cottage Grove Road to Walter Street, with no access to an outbound lane between those two points.

“We appreciate those who have been safely and patiently navigating the changes in traffic,” City of Madison Project Manager Andrew Zwieg said. “The new bidirectional traffic pattern will allow for an easier commute throughout the near east side of Madison and will restore easier access to local businesses along Atwood.”

While the new bridge over Starkweather Creek continues to be worked on, most of Atwood is now available for bike and pedestrian use on the new paths.

One of the three lanes on Atwood Avenue will remain closed to traffic as crews continue construction on the new roadway. Vehicles, bikes and pedestrians should stay alert and watch for traffic shifts throughout the corridor while remaining construction operations take place.

In addition to the reopening of the street, Metro Transit has moved its inbound temporary bus stops to their permanent locations in the project area. View route information on their website: cityofmadison.com/metro.

Access to all side streets has also been restored; however, remaining construction operations in those areas may temporarily impact access during the day.

The majority of the work will be completed by November 1. Crews will continue to work on some areas within the project limits through November. Those traveling in the area should continue to use caution and follow the posted signage.
